Was a good gym, but the new managers keep making it worse. If you ever want to be that guy on r/climbing that posts a v8 to get ridiculed with v2 at my gym... Well this is that gym...
(I'm only rating the customer service) I wanted to buy a climbing gift for a friend and I received excellent advice from the extremely friendly staff. Made it worthwhile to drive all the way to this gym in spite of this not being the nearest one.
This place just keeps managing to get worse. First of all the place is filthy, they avoid cleaning their holds like it’s against their religion, they actually rely on the grease on them that builds up to determine the problem’s difficulty, that and making is so awkward that an octopus would get discombobulated to make a climb harder rather than make a fun bouldering problem that requires any sort of thought. Second of all the routes just aren’t satisfying, this place used to be bustling but nowadays the staff don’t even climb here but opt for superior climbing facilities like ‘Up the bloc’ or ‘The hub’ for their own pass time and they will verify this if you ask them, the staff are micromanaged by a manager who shows up once a week to check on his investment but isn’t involved with any of the local climbing scene and it shows in the route setting and employee morale. Third of all is their new “summer hours” which is my personal last straw for this location I used to love and have been going to for years, their new summer hours make it so much less convenient for my purposes with them drastically cutting their operating hours so that half the time I go their for my regular session time I find the place closed, these new summer hours make it less accessible if you want to come on a weekend, like to go in the afternoon or in the evening. I discovered my love for bouldering here but I have watched this place transform from a local beloved bouldering spot filled with passion into a disappointment that is clearly being sucked for all it’s worth by the ‘Boulderz’ franchise. Where has the integrity gone
I'm a newer climber (April 2024). I attribute a lot of my new found obsession with climbing to the stellar community and atmosphere fostered at The Cave. Big shoutout to the original co-owners for what they built. It's a no frills bouldering specific gym at time of writing. Tucked away between a welding school and mechanic shop, it's easy to miss. Whimsically a bit like the nature of this sport's outdoor roots. Boulderz has great modern climbing with all the bells and whistles out in Etobicoke and I'm excited for where they'll take this gym in the future. For right now, you should come here for the great staff & passionate team of clever route-setters, and the layout that seems perfectly designed to encourage socializing and beta sharing. If you're looking for a place to fall in love with climbing, or a winter refuge that feels like hanging out at a crag, give The Cave a try.
I’ve only recently started going here and I absolutely love the atmosphere. The staff are great, the bouldering puzzles are engaging, and the setup overall is very nice. I also saw multiple different setters test problems. Huge plus as it can cater to anyone that way.
Their (climbing) routes are well thought out and challenging on various levels. Staff is super friendly, and they have classes for beginners as well. They have one of the best rock climbing communities (if not the best).
Super fun and affordable place to boulder. The crowd was fun, and everyone was super helpful. I did the one month trial and had fun, I just wish the location was closer to me. For those who boulder only, I would highly recommend this place. I couldn't solely rely on powering my way up routes like at other gyms. I was forced to up my technique game. Really fun route setting!
